Awards & Recognition

1. YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARD- 1989 BY Kerala Science Congress in the section industry

The award was instituted by the State Committee for Science Technology and  environment, Govt. of Kerala and was received for the development of indigenously produced steel-fibre combination wire rope as import substitution.

Young Scientist Award being received from
Padmashri Dr. P.R. Pisharoti

2. JEB (Journal of Environmental Biology) Prize –1989 - Young Scientist award instituted by the Academy of Environmental Biology,Lucknow

Biofouling being a major economic problem in the performance and maintenance of fishing vessels, detailed studies were conducted on various aspects of this problem for the PhD thesis. This study will help in planning control measures for biofouling. The ‘Academy of Environmental Biology’ adjudged this work as worthy of the 5thJEB PRIZE – a gold medal and citation in the year 1989.

3. Panjabrao Deshmukh Woman Agricultural Scientist Award - 2002 (National Award) of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi

This award was received for the best output in the Fisheries field (life time achievement).

Award being received from Hon. Agriculture
Minister Shri Raj Nath Singh

4.   Best Paper Award - 2006 Instituted by Society of Fisheries Technologists (India) for the paper Utilization of Rubber wood for fishing canoe construction appeared in the Journal Fishery Technology Vol. 42(1) :47-54

Chemical preservation and covering the wood with FRP for upgradation of low cost timbers to make them more durable was attempted and the utilisation of rubber wood for marine purposes may to a modest extent reduce deforestation and thus help in maintaining ecological stability and conserving our fast deteriorating environment. Greater durability and prolonged service life is expected for this canoe compared to the conventional plank built canoe.

5. Fellowship Award from Academy of Environmental Biology for Contribution for Fisheries Science especially in the field of upgradation and standardization of fishing gear materials and fishing methods.
Award received from Padmabushan Dr.S.Z.Qasim

6.  Women and Technological Innovation National Award (WATI National Award2007)
instituted by the Bharatiya Stree Shakthi, Mumbai, 2007

The award was received for the indigenous production of combination wire rope as an import substitution. The production of combination rope within the country has given a big boost to the deep-sea fishing industry of the country opening up new opportunities for the exploitation of the EEZ. Even on a conservative estimate the annual requirement for India will be about 0.5 million meters of rope and at the present rate the cost will be over 15 million in foreign exchange.

7. VASVIK Award (Given in 2008). CHANDABEN MOHANBHAI PATEL VASVIKAWARD 2003 in the field of Agricultural Sciences & Technology, instituted by the VividhlaxiAudyogikSamshodhanVikas Kendra, Mumbai For the following research achievements
  • Commercial exploitation of our active, multispecies, and less dense fishery resources need high speed demersal trawls. Three designs of High speed demersal trawls (For catching fish and crustaceans) were developed and successfully tested in deep sea trawling.
  • Development of combination wire rope as a gear accessory for deep sea demersal trawling. The process for its commercial manufacture was standardized in collaboration with M/s South India wire ropes and standards (approved by BIS) were laid down for the first time in India.
  • Development of Standard lobster traps. The indigenous traps used for fishing spiny lobsters are fabricated with natural fibers like ‘palmyrah leaf stalk fibres’, which deteriorate fast and require heavy ballast for sinking. Metal traps of MS rod and welded mesh covering which is fully covered with rigid plastic protective coating proved to be strong and durable

Award receiving from Former President of India-Hon.Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam
